Free Jacks Sign Pro14 Prop, Xandre Vos, From Southern Kings
Free Jacks add Powerful and Energetic Loosehead Prop through 2022 Season of Major League Rugby
BOSTON – September 15, 2020 – The Free Jacks have added 23-year-old Xandre Vos for the 2021 and 2022 seasons of Major League Rugby. The 5’9, 245lb prop brings his energetic style of play and top-level experience from the Pro 14 to New England. Xandre has amassed 12 Pro14 appearances with Port Elizabeth’s Southern Kings in South Africa.
“I’m really excited about this new path in my rugby career, picking up a new challenge and taking the opportunity to develop in an awesome region like New England.” said Vos. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the squad, putting my stamp on the New England scrum and bringing a little bit of Vos force to the pack.”
Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Vos attended Graeme College where he impressed at the age grade level. Vos started in all 31 matches for the school’s top rugby side in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Vos earned a position with the Eastern Province Kings Under 19 program while at the same time beginning his studies at Nelson Mandela University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth in Sports Management.
Vos played a key role in the 2015 Eastern Province Kings side that dominated the South African Under 19 Currie Cup, leading the team to the championship. Vos progressed to represent the Eastern Province Kings Under 21 side and was selected for the Eastern Province Elephants, debuting in the 2017 Currie Cup and making the quarterfinals in the Supersport Challenge.
Vos received his first professional contract for the 2018/19 Pro14 Season with the Southern Kings. Vos has earned 12 caps to date for the Port Elizabeth based Southern Kings. During that time Vos has been a consistent performer for the Eastern Province Elephants, making 24 appearances between the Supersport Challenge and Currie Cup competitions.
“Xandre brings some real grit to the Free Jacks forward pack,” commented head coach, Ryan Martin. ‘He is a true go forward player who loves to carry and hit hard. Importantly he is known in his former environments for his leadership attributes and work ethic. We are excited to see him grow and develop as a player and a person here in the New England environment.”
A proven performer with a long career ahead, Xandre is tipped to be a real handful in Major League Rugby. A strong scrummager, with experience playing both sides of the scrum, Xandre will be welcomed with open arms to what is a formidable squad forming in New England.
